Free means free as in freedom. It has nothing to do with cost. This video obviously misrepresents the term. Also, Audacity is not a ProTools alternative, in fact, it is funny he said that. The proper alternative would be Ardour.

I'd like to ask what free software could be used to make cartoon animation and such?
By: phatcartoon. on 02 Jul 10, 14:24:15
@BigBobsh2o, As for Open-source and making money, there are many ways to make money with out selling the software. Google offers a lot of free services, but I doubt you give back, and they seem to be doing just fine. Also, the whole point of open-source is if someone wants the source code they can download it, and make changes if they like. It's a community. . . . P.s. Ubuntu offers paid tech support, merchandise , and you may also purchase a CD copy of their distro for ten bucks.
By: phatcartoon. on 02 Jul 10, 14:18:58
@BigBobsh2o, But, I do give back. My main focus is giving back to the Blender community. Development isn't always just about programing, they also need artists and musicians. I also hang out in the Ubuntu form and try to help people with questions. As for now, i'm still doing my basics when it comes to code. My friend and I are planning on expanding the "Pencil" project. But, you can't expect everyone to give back. Sometimes giving back is just spreading the word.
By: BigBobsh2o. on 01 Jul 10, 15:18:38
@phatcartoon Um, good for you? But since they saved you money don't you think they deserve something in return? Sounds like a one sided relationship to me. I wouldn't want to see Open Source programs be expensive like Windows, Adobe , etc. But I think $50 for video, sound, operating systems, etc is a VERY fair price. Linux Fedora or Ubuntu for example should be sold for about $30 - $50. Given how good it is. Even at those prices it's still accessible to people.
By: BigBobsh2o. on 01 Jul 10, 15:12:46
@phatcartoon No it's not wrong to volunteer for what you said. But it's down right stupid to give away software the way they do. This is the product they produce. And if you make something that good you should be compensated. It's only fair. If everyone on see and alter your code, they can steal your ideas. And since you are the creator of that product, how is that fair to you?
By: phatcartoon. on 01 Jul 10, 11:54:02
@BigBobsh2o one more thing I would like to add. I'm an artists. Computers have made making production (flyers, Logos, layouts) cheap and easy. Hasn't hurt my pocket, but actually made it a bit fatter. A lot less raw material is needed, which means a much smaller overhead. Also, one thing that helps me improve as an artists are large communities that are willing to help others. Similar to that of an open-source community. . . P.s. Sorry if I rambled on a bit. :/
By: phatcartoon. on 01 Jul 10, 11:43:45
@BigBobsh2o, I don't agree. So, are you saying it's wrong to choose to volunteer to help others? Do you charge family and friends for every penny of your work? Ever go to the YMCA? Ever use the Libary? A lot of volunteers for that. I have many friends that are paid programmers, but outside of work they like to work on open-source projects. Do you think Companies like Canonical don't pay their employees? Open-source is a great learning tool and a way to share and improve code.
By: BigBobsh2o. on 29 Jun 10, 01:29:08
I don't like the idea of open source. Let me ask you "If you were a welder, and you had the equipment and knowledge, you would weld things for free?" I think not. And software is no different. In the long run I think this is going to hurt developers in the pocket. Whenever something becomes cheap and easy to produce it's hurts the producer financially.
